"Dance for me has always been much more than just good physical exercise and I am endlessly fascinated by the liberating power of inspirational creativity at the heart of oriental dance.  I enjoy more and more the freedom of spontaneous self-expression in my dance.  I have also found dancing a useful way to unblock energy and release tension and put myself back in my body, from my overactive mind.  A way of being here now, as in meditation.  I feel the music in my body and allow my dance to emerge.  Dance helps me to relax, feel good about myself and open my heart to contagious joy and love.  I believe the dance to be a perfect way for women to feel powerful and honor themselves as women."

Helené teaches locally at her studio in Felton, as well as an ongoing series of workshops in other parts of the U.S.A., and has been teaching in Europe since 1990.  She is also a SPECTRA Artist and teaches Egyptian and Moroccan Folkloric Dance to children in elementary schools in San Benito and in Santa Cruz through the Cultural Council.

Helené was a recipient of the Gail Rich Awards, 2002, for her significant contribution to the Arts in Santa Cruz County.  Joined by John Connell on Persian flute and percussion, she presents a journey along the ancient trade routes through dance and music, embracing such cultures as those of Afghanistan & Iran. With the local band Orient'al,  Helené  presents shows of Middle East music and dance regularly at Don Quixote's in Felton, CA.

Orient'al plays popular and classical Arabic, Turkish and Armenian music, Band Leader Armondo Mafufo of Sirocco fame is a masterful percussionist, composer and teacher whose expertise has been recognized by numerous awards both locally and internationally.  He is joined by outstanding musicians Michael Gruber and Ganapati using traditional instruments ney and oud (flute and lute).

Helené's latest dance adventure is Rock 'N Belly Roll!  with the KOZ. Veteran singer, songwriter and guitarist Rory Koshlaychuk presents his original melodies, accompanied by bassist Marvin Labrie, drummer Erik Gunn and keyboardist Brian Chester.  Rock 'N Belly is a unique fusion of western and eastern styles and likely to become a global craze!
